Queen Square in Bath was the first Georgian 'set piece' design by John Wood.
The square has great historic significance and has been the location for many celebrations
and activities past and present. However, the square today has several failings
that means it is not used to its full potential.
The square is dominated by traffic, which circulates as a gyratory system around
the square. This results in noise intrusion and contributes to its severance
for pedestrians. The square also has limited points of access. In fact
the only way in is a gate to the south. Inside the square, the park is unsipiring
with limited features and poor lighting.
Working with Place Studio urban designers, McLoughlin Ross LLP heritage architects
and Synergy LLP Quantity Surveryers, Callidus has developed solutions for traffic
and pedestrian circulation for the short, medium and long term. The solutions
deliver better accessibility for pedestrians, increase safety for all road users
and potentially allow traffic to circulate more easily.
The proposals are shortly to be submitted to the Council for consideration and it
is hoped some of the ideas will be implemented in time for the Queen's Jubilee celebrations
and the 25 year of Bath as a World Heriateg site in 2012. |
